Hands On – Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+

A massive screen with the perfect form factor for single handed use – that’s the first thought that comes to mind when you get your hands Samsung’s latest flagship device – the new Galaxy S8. The smartphone, which launched today at a media event in New York, is the successor to the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, announced at MWC last year.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 packs a 5.8inch screen in a body which feels like a 5 inch smartphone, thanks to it’s super slim edges on the side, and bezels cut in half on the top & bottom. The Galaxy S8+ is best used with both hands as it comes with a 6.2inch display. Form factor wise – it feels very similar to last year’s Galaxy S7 edge. Reaching corners on either phone is hard, even with huge hands like mine. The display on both the S8 and the S8+ is curved, similar to the S7 edge display from last year. The screen is super tall, and with a resolution of 2960×1440, it’s got an odd aspect ratio.

The fingerprint sensor has been moved to the back of the phone, as the bezel would be too small to fit in the sensor. The sensor could have been better placed in my opinion, probably below the camera like the Huawei or LG devices rather than on the side to avoid fingerprints.

Samsung has ditched the Micro-USB connector and gone for a USB-C in the S8 and the S8+ at the bottom, along with a headphone jack.

On the top, you’ll find a sim card slot with support of 2 SIM cards (models with Samsung’s own Exynos processor which we will get in the Middle East), or one sim card and one MicroSD card slot for storage expansion. Both the devices come with 64GB of internal storage, where about 50GB will be accessible for user content.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ will be available in five colors – Midnight Black, Orchid Gray, Coral Blue, Arctic Silver and Maple Gold. They all come with a black front display, and will be available for purchase from the 21st of April. Pricing has not been announced yet, but we can expect it to launch at around the same price as the S7 last year.
