Users in UAE can now pick their favourite broadband and phone providers

TRA has announced that home users in the UAE can now pick their favourite broadband internet and phone services provider. Previously, the availability of a provider was dependent on the area; some areas featured du exclusively, while others featured Etisalat. With this step, the telecommunication landscape has moved another step towards true competition.

However, users will still have to wait before porting over their TV services. The current announcement covers broadband and phone services exclusively. This means that users who port over now will either have to keep two separate providers, and thus two different bills, or forego TV services. The last option may not seem bad for cord-cutters, but it is still an inconvenience for the majority.

The option is available to all users who’s homes are covered by the fibre network and porting over should take about 7 days.

This move follows Mobile Number Portability which, announced in 2013, was the first step in opening up the market.
