Etisalat launches a local search engine, connect.ae
Etisalat has recently announced the launch of connect.ae – a local search engine developed in partnership with Eniro, which is a search company that aggregates, filters and organizes local information mainly based in the Nordic Region.
Connect.ae is actually a product of Etisalat Information Services (EIS), which is a subsidiary of Etisalat Telecommunications Corporation. EIS, also responsible for yellowpages.ae, describes connect.ae as a fully-digital search service in the United Arab Emirates. Among other things it allows users to search for their favorite destinations either for business or pleasure offering routing guidance as well as many value-added services for the search results. The service is available online in both English (connect.ae) and Arabic (كونكت.امارات) languages. It’s got a completely responsive web design and is available through the web browser as well apps on both iOS and Android.
“We searched for the best partner to develop a unique local search engine as a complement to our telecom business,” comments Rashid Khusaif Al Naqbi, General Manager, Etisalat Information Services. “We are looking forward to a successful launch in our home market, with a view to subsequently launching services in our other markets.”
The website almost seems like a modern version of Yellow Pages – which can be very useful for B2B searches as well as searching for businesses that do not have an online presence. But, as is the case with new services that rely on maintaining a large database, do not expect to find everything on here. Google Maps, was not the best when it first started off and Zomato didn’t cover every restaurant either. Connect.ae is still in its infancy and this move by Etisalat shows that they believe they can use their years of expertise in the region and provide a better local search experience.
What Etisalat plans to do with Yellowpages is anybody’s guess, but for now the newly designed and updated way to get information about local businesses seems to be connect.ae or you know, Google.
