Sony introduces the selfie-friendly Xperia C3

The Dual Sim Phone boasts a 5.5” screen, a 5 megapixel front camera and will be available at the end of August

The Xperia C3 is Sony’s newest smartphone that aims to deliver an uncompromising experience, at a competitive price.

The phone dubbed (immodestly) ‘the world’s best smartphone’ by Sony itself features a 5 megapixel front camera with a 25mm focal length and 80 degree field of view. This means you get more people in your selfie shot with a higher image quality.

In portrait mode, you can just double tap the back and the camera will take a picture. No more awkward struggles to reach the camera button.

The Xperia C3 also features additional software enhancements within its Camera app – the Portrait Retouch feature is built for selfies. Images can be enhanced or ‘retouched’ in a variety of ways that includes ‘real time makeovers’, skin softening, eye beam light reflection effects; all of these in an attempt to delivery that perfect selfie.

Finally the front camera also includes a flashlight style flash next to the front camera. It doesn’t have the brightness of a full flash and that’s a good thing, because at a much shorter distance it could be blinding. A weaker flash does a good job of brightening up the image.

Sony wasn’t kidding when it said it thinks this is the world’s best selfie smartphone.

It’s not just the selfie, Sony is consciously working towards delivering a fun experience with the camera. This is evident with the Augmented Reality effect it has built into the camera. You can take pictures wearing a fun mask, or having party favours in the background or even 3D dinosaurs  – a little gimmicky if you ask me but there is clearly a market for it.  The rear camera of the Xperia C3 features an 8 megapixel sensor.

The phone features a 5.5” IPS display with Sony’s trademark BRAVIA technology. The resolution of the screen is 720p which results in about 267 ppi; this isn’t flagship level pixel density. Similarly the phone is powered by a 1.2 GHz quad core processor with 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of storage. The good news is that there is room for storage to be expanded with a microSD card.

Sony has managed to keep a light and slim profile on the Xperia C3 with a thickness of just 7.6 mm  and a weight of 150g; this device is a lighter than you would expect it to be. Holding the device is a pleasure too, thanks to it smooth back and curved edges. I personally prefer it to the boxy design aesthetics we’ve seen in the Z series, that I’m not a fan of. It still retains the chrome finishing around the body of the device  that is quintessentially Xperia, but the smoother edges make for a softer feel.

In addition to the Black and White colours that we’ve seen on Sony smartphones, the Xperia C3 comes in a new cool Mint Green colour. This was my personal favourite colour as it brings a personality to the device in a stylish manner. Other manufacturers have attempted colours and often end up looking garish or simply tacky.

The Xperia C3 features Dual SIM capabilities and users can enable both the SIMs at the same time. While this might seem obvious, there are some dual SIM phones that support the use of two SIMs but only allow for one SIM to be active at a time.

The phone is a mid-range device in terms of specifications, and the price reflects that too at AED 1,199. But Sony shouldn’t and probably isn’t too concerned with that. The Xperia C3 has been built by Sony to cater to a niche and in our short hands on it did a damn good job at it.

The Sony Xperia C3 will be available in UAE and Saudi Arabia at the end of August for AED 1,199
